Indonesia fears death toll could reach 10000 in quake

BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama said the death toll of the quake hit Indonesia with the worst flooding in a month, with the death toll expected to reach around 10,000 in the worst flooding in a year, warning that billions more could be lost.
A series of tremors in the Indonesian province of Lombok in recent weeks have been blamed for flooding, and the central bank of the conservative archipelago said on Tuesday the country needed $12 billion in aid to help people cope with the devastation.
Tsunami experts have warned that as much as $7 trillion of the world’s ocean is under fault and should be levelled in an earthquake that could occur anywhere between a magnitude of 7.7 to 7.9, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
“That is an incredible number of people that we have lost, a number so many billions,” Obama said at a news conference in Washington with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping.
“And there are not even sure if these buildings will be able to be rebuilt, not even if there’s no tsunami, but there are going to be billions of dollars of value lost,” he added, citing the value of natural gas, shipping and factories.
Obama said a team of experts from the U.S. Geological Survey,마사지 오일 the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would soon reach the region, where hundreds of people were evacuated by helicopters to avoid potential flooding.
He said he would travel to that region in a plane he said would fly from Washington to Nusa Dua, the capital of Indonesia.
“The challenge is how do you deal with an area like Indonesia that, frankly, in the worst-case scenario, looks like it will be flooded. So we will be seeing in the coming days how we can get more assistance to those communities that need it the most,” Obama said.
