“I’ve been in the business 10 years, and these were the most aggressive that I’ve ever seen,” said Christopher McCracken, director of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau, in response to the recent news that the city has installed around 100 red-light cameras in the last three years.
It’s common for police chiefs to use the word “dangerous,” given the fact that the cameras have captured thousands of people, many of them on bikes or pedaling throu스웨 디시gh red lights, without a citation or warning.
It was the third such camera deployment that has been conducted since August, as the city works on the system, set to be rolled out as soon as October.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and City Councilman Paul Koretz have been outspoken critics of the cameras, which have caught far fewer people than critics have claimed, while they have been criticized for sending people into an uproar. Critics also point out that the city is paying for the cameras out of its general budget, while the rest of the state and federal government is obligated to pay their cost.
One of the most controversial aspects of the cameras, however, has been their presence in areas where cyclists were present, and in areas that have yet to see more extensive red-light camera deployment in recent years.
LAPD officers have been spotted by local residents and others doing their jobs in unmarked vehicles pulling up beside bicycles on the side of the road as the driver of a vehicle has turned to cross the intersection and stop.
In addition, a recent Los Angeles Times investigation found that LAPD officers have reportedly been using the red-light camera system, too, even when they have just had nothing to do with a stop.
Koretz’s legislation is modeled after a bill approved in December by the state senate in Long Beach, which also expanded red light camera use in that area.
