Abuse survivor calls for financial compensation from church
The church, which claims to be a “moral community,” has come under heavy criticism in the past for its decades-long practice of using abuse victims as “cash cows” for religious benefits, including tax-exempt status and other taxpayer subsidies.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has refused to pay child support payments to more than 50 people it has imprisoned in custody over the decades as part of its decades-long abuse-survivor program, and it also has refused to pay the U.S. Social Security Disability Compensation Fund for one of the men who has died.
The church is appealing a 2012 ruling by a Texas judge to have its records and financial records destroyed. The church says it was given a 10-year extension for that purpose, but in a separate case filed Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Robert Young ordered the release of documents it says are important to resolving claims against the church over its decades-long abuse-survivor program.
“A majority of victims in the church are not responsible to their abusers,” said Sarah Smith, an attorney representing the victims. “They’re there for the church to fulfill their promises, but they’ve been left behind because their abusers were gone, or because their abusers were in jail. They’re not accountable.”
If the documents and records related to some of the men were released, “it will go a long way toward providing the victims with some closure and hope that their stories have some meaning,” she added.
